Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to report the assault to the police?

No. You may receive advocacy, case management, medical support, support groups and many other services without making a police report.

What if the assault happened a long time ago?

It is never too late to seek support. Many survivors reach out months or years after an assault.

Will someone go to the hospital with me?

Yes. If you would like, a Turning Pointe advocate can meet you at the hospital and remain with you throughout your medical visit.

Will my information remain confidential?

Yes. Our advocates provide confidential services as permitted under Washington State law.

What if I'm not sure what happened?

That’s okay.

You do not need to have all the answers before calling. We will listen, answer your questions, and help you understand your options.

Can my family or friends receive support?

Yes. Sexual assault affects loved ones, too. We are available to provide education, information, and support to those helping a survivor.

Legal Advocacy

Navigating the legal system can feel overwhelming. Our advocates provide information and support while respecting your choices every step of the way.

Legal advocacy services include:

Assistance reporting to law enforcement
Court accompaniment
Protection order assistance
Crime Victims Compensation applications
Referrals to attorneys
Support throughout criminal and civil legal proceedings
Continued advocacy after your case concludes

Our role is to ensure you understand your options—not to tell you what decisions to make.

Medical Advocacy

Seeking medical care after a sexual assault is your choice.

If you decide to receive medical care, a Turning Pointe advocate can meet you at the hospital and remain with you throughout the process.

Our advocates can:

Explain what to expect during the medical exam
Answer questions about your options
Provide emotional support
Stay with you during the forensic exam, if you choose
Connect you with additional services and resources

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) may be able to collect forensic evidence if the assault occurred recently. In many cases, this should occur within approximately five days (120 hours) of the assault.

Receiving medical care does not require you to report to law enforcement.

Throughout the exam, you remain in control. You may stop or decline any portion of the exam at any time.
